2009 theme: …underneath all of those fascinating cultural differences... resides a shared humanity that makes even the most naïve visitors feel at home in cultures across
the globe ~Frans De Waal, The Ape and the Sushi Master

Holly Schott - First Place

first place- agra india

Independent Study Abroad Program: Semester At Sea, 2008
Agra, India. Upon arriving at the Taj Mahal, we were trying unsuccessfully to put on our Saris, when we were suddenly surrounded by three giggling women. As they helped us with the complex attire, they quickly befriended us and told us that, "American friends now look like REAL Indian Girls!"

Carina Giachino - Second Place

second place

SDSU faculty-led program (College of Extended Studies), 2009
Koh Samui, Thailand. As we strolled on the beach, we came across a local Thai boy and a German boy playing together. Somehow they understood each other and learned from each other, sharing in this simple moment together with no thought to the differences in culture and language.

Alicia Butterfield - Third Place

third place

Research Abroad: Applied Anthropology (Anthro 495), 2009
Hatton, Sri Lanka. An impoverished Sri Lankan tea plucker offers a big smile and laughs as I try to speak with her in broken Tamil. These women were eager to share their lives, stories and struggles with a curious American during my 6 weeks of research in the country.

Andrew Lewandowski - Honorable Mention

honorable mention

SDSU exchange program: Nanyang Technological University, Singapore
Mekong Delta in Can Tho, Vietnam. Replace the river way with a highway. Replace the boat with a semi-truck. Replace the huts with a Wal-Mart. Replace the blue sky with a smoggy sky. Replace anything, and suddenly your world seems a little bit closer. Replace anything, and suddenly the world seems a little less wonderful.
