A Message from Jaclyn:

A Message from Jaclyn:
I am Jaclyn Hugg, this year’s Graduate Assistant for the Compact Scholars Program (CSP).  I look forward to working with many of you this year.
One of my goals is to be able to help you thrive here at SDSU – growing personally and professionally.  Thus, I leave you with one of my favorite quotes to ponder:
“In his or her life, each person can take one of two attitudes: to build or to plant.  Builders may take years over their tasks, but one day they will finish what they are doing.  Then they will stop, hemmed in by their own walls.  Life becomes meaningless once the building is finished.  Those who plant suffer the storms and the seasons and rarely rest.  Unlike a building, a garden never stops growing.  And by its constant demands on the gardener’s attention, it makes the gardener’s life a great adventure.”  Paulo Coelho
What are you - the builder or the planter?  Stop by my office to let me know!  I am located in the Administration building (AD-201F), and my office hours for fall semester 2009 are:
 ·         Mondays- 1:00pm – 7:00pm
·         Tuesdays- 1:00pm – 7:00pm
·         Wednesdays - 10:00am - 2:00pm
·         Thursdays- 10:00am - 2:00pm

 See you soon,
Jaclyn D. Hugg

You may be eligible for a couple of scholarships supported by the Division of Undergraduate Studies. One scholarship is called the Gilman International Scholarship Program. This scholarship allows students to study abroad for up to one academic year with up to $5,000 in award money. Another source of funding for study abroad is from the DUS Incentive Scholarship. This scholarship supports an approved SDSU student study program, research or an internship. Students only in the Compact Scholars Program, Liberal Studies, or University Honors Program are eligible to apply. Factors such as your 1) GPA, 2) length and quality of your study abroad program and 3) financial need may be considerations for the scholarship selection process.

CSP 2009 Summer Orientation

The Compact Scholars Program held a Compact Scholars Program Orientation on June 19, 2009. We had just over 100 students in attendance learning about what it means to be a Compact Scholar, receiving information on the Common Experience, the student learning lounge at the Division of Undergraduate Studies, the Compact Scholars University Seminar class and the Scholars for Success organization. Students were able to ask attending faculty in their majors, about classes, events and other opportunities in their departments. New friends and relationships were established.
We want to acknowledge the following students and thank them for taking time from their summer to volunteer and assist with this summer program:

  • Jen Abundez – Scholars for Success, President
  • Ellese Carmona - Scholars for Success, Community Outreach
  • Isabel Cortes - Scholars for Success, Treasurer
  • Paola Diaz - Scholars for Success, Secretary

10th Annual 7th Grade Campus Visit

On Saturday, October 24, 2009 San Diego State University will be hosting the annual 7th grade visit. This year marks the 10th anniversary of this event which is the first core activity of Compact for Success. This year’s visit will once again begin in the Viejas Arena (formerly Cox Arena) from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm where an anticipated 4,000 students and parents will be entertained by the Mariachis de Chula Vista and also the nationally acclaimed SDSU cheer and dance teams. To close the morning’s opening session, President Weber and SUHSD Superintendent Gandara will also sign the memorandum of understanding (MOU) which is the agreement for the Compact for Success collaboration. The MOU will extend the collaboration agreement to the year 2015. compact fopr success

The 7th grade campus visit will feature information tables where students and parents can find out about SDSU clubs and organizations as well information about the various colleges and programs at SDSU. In addition, there will be several workshops offered to campus visitors on subjects such as: Steps to College, The Compact Scholars SDSU Student Experience, College Can be Affordable, and many other workshop topics. Moreover, two new workshop themes have been incorporated into the visit focusing on careers and student leadership.

Compact for Success has been a vital part of the SUHSD. During the course of the last ten years, CFS has witnessed a significant increase in the number of students admitted to SDSU through the guaranteed admissions agreement. As President Weber states, “The Compact for Success is important because it reaches a greater number of students, and doesn’t target just one small group. It reaches thousands of students and enlists teachers, counselors, parents, who are crucial in supporting these students and making the goal of succeeding at the university part of the enduring fabric of their community.”

The Scholars for Success is a group designed to help students who are currently attending SDSU and have graduated from the Sweetwater Union High School District (SUHSD). We want to help develop active members in our SDSU community by providing academic support, social events, community outreach events, as well as fundraising events to help further the success of the SUHSD students on our campus.
