Latino Mental Health Research Training Programs

Summer 2018 in Mexico, May 28-August 11

Dr. Steven Lopez at USC’s Department of Psychology, Dr. Shoshana Berenzon at the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatría Ramón de la Fuente Muñiz (INP) in México City, and colleagues at the Instituto Nacional de Psiquiatria (INP), USC, UCLA, University of Oregon and California State University at San Bernardino have established an 11-week summer research training program designed to prepare undergraduate and graduate level researchers to address disparities in mental health care of U.S. Latinos with mental illness and substance use disorders. The program includes a one-week training seminar at USC, and a 10-week training program at the INP, during which trainees will:

• Work closely with Mexican investigators and Latino mental health researchers to develop research and professional skills.

• Participate in various aspects of research, including project conceptualization and data collection and analysis.

• Have the opportunity to write up their findings for publication in collaboration with their mentor, and present their findings at a national conference in either Mexico or the U.S.

• Learn much more about developing a research career.

Minority Health/Health Disparities International Research Training (MHIRT) at SDSU

Funds international summer research experiences in Ghana, Jordan, Peru, Taiwan, Uganda, and Mexico. The program provides training in biomedical sciences, medical anthropology, and public health. It is a paid fellowship opportunity, provides funds for visa and passport fees, roundtrip travel to and housing at the research site, per diem allowance and a modest stipend. 

Eligible participants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents from a group underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical or social sciences (includes members of racial/ethnic groups, and disadvantaged groups such as socioeconomic class, disability, and first generation college students).

Pasteur Foundation: Paul W. Zuccaire Undergraduate Internships 

The Pasteur Foundation Summer Internship Program provides U.S. undergraduates, entering their Junior year, with the rare opportunity to work on supervised research projects at the Institut Pasteur. The Foundation's goal is to encourage and inspire students in the pursuit of a scientific career and to expose them to an international laboratory experience.

Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE)

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) invites undergraduate students from the US and Canada in the fields of Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth Sciences and Engineering to apply for a summer research internship in Germany.

School of Life Sciences Summer Research Program, Lausanne, Switzerland 

Offers an intensive research training opportunity to 25 undergraduate students interested in research careers in life sciences.

The University of Tokyo Research Internship Program

Conduct a paid six week research project in the natural sciences or related fields (physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary science, and biological sciences). The program includes an excursion outside of Tokyo and a short course on the Japanese language and culture.

Some Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) through the National Science Foundation involve research abroad. Search the website and apply for specific opportunities. Deadlines vary. 


Weizmann Institute of Science 

Summer research opportunity to participate in research projects in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and the life sciences. As part of the summer program students will be associated with a laboratory or a theoretical research project under the supervision of an experienced scientist and, (for a short period of time), will become a full-fledged member of the scientific team.
