Hybrid University Seminar

On average, students in hybrid courses performed better than those receiving only face-to-face instruction, because blended course conditions allowed for additional learning time and varied modes of instruction.

Students who complete the brand new Hybrid University Seminar will:

  1. Develop personal and academic success skills that are applicable across subjects and across time.
  2. Begin developing writing and critical thinking skills in accordance with university expectations.
  3. Practice technology-mediated learning and self-motivation necessitated by large universities in the digital age.
  4. Understand the culture of higher education; including its purpose and customs.
  5. Gain insight into the culture and practices of their chosen field, including resources and opportunities available to them in their colleges.

A learning community allows you to take several classes as a package, so that you will have the same classmates—it is easier to make friends, check on assignments, and work together.

The Common Experience

Three years ago, San Diego State University launched a sustained, intentional conversation dubbed the Common Experience. The goal of this type of dialogical voyage was to promote a sense of intellectual connection across the campus and into the community. In 2009, San Diego State expands the initiative and embarks on a worldwide discussion. The global discourse springs from shared perceptions regarding the logic of celebrating the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth (1809) and the sesquicentennial of the publication of his On the Origin of Species (1859).
