Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments
Advisor: Bonnie M. Anderson, Assistant Dean
What is Interdisciplinary Studies-3D?
Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments is a special major ONLY for students whose career goal or academic interest is not addressed by an existing SDSU major or major/minor pattern.
Because three disciplines are involved, the program must have a clear focus and depth that make academic sense; the areas of study and the choice of courses within these departments must be complementary. Students are responsible for identifying the field they wish to pursue and must be able to defend their choice orally and in writing. The diploma awarded in this major does not identify the areas of concentration.
Some examples:
- A program in musical theater combining courses in Music, Theatre and Dance;
(See the Specialization in Performing Arts)
- A program in human services combining courses in Social Work, Psychology, and Sociology;
- A pre-law program combining courses in History, Political Science and Economics;
- Renaissance studies combining courses in History, Art and Literature;
- A pre-health profession program combining courses in Biology, Chemistry and a non-science discipline.
What is NOT accepted in this major:
- Proposals which lack cohesion, depth or focus;
- Proposals which look like a collection of various minors or have two complementary areas and one that doesn't fit;
- Proposals consisting mainly of coursework already completed and submitted after the student has reached 90 units;
- Proposals from students intending to pursue a teaching credential;
- Proposals including departments not listed below:

How can you declare the Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments major?
- IS-3D cannot be declared on the SDSU application form. (Students selecting Interdisciplinary Studies in Three Departments on their application will be defaulted into Undeclared or second choice of major.)
- Write an essay of at least 200 words (typewritten) describing the focus and goal of your intended plan and explaining how each of the three departments you are choosing contributes to this plan.
- List on the Preliminary Draft (pdf document) the courses you are interested in taking.
- Make an appointment with the Interdisciplinary Studies-3D adviser in AD-101 (594-5841). Bring the essay and Preliminary Draft to the meeting.
- After receiving preliminary approval from the IS-3D adviser, consult the undergraduate adviser in each of the three areas. Go to www.sdsu.edu/advising for an up-to-date list of advisers. Discuss your plans with each adviser and obtain approval of your plan.
- Return your Master Plan to AD 101 for the final approval from the IS3D adviser.
