The Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires a comprehensive, summative assessment. The Liberal Studies Assessment Portfolio serves as the summative assessment for the SDSU Liberal Studies major. This section describes the steps that students take from their freshmen year to graduation as they prepare their Liberal Studies portfolio.

The Liberal Studies portfolio consists of 19 samples selected primarily from upper division classes, plus seven reflections essays, and a capstone essay. In their reflections, students follow specific guidelines to explain how their samples demonstrate their understanding of the subject matter. In the capstone essay, students contrast the goals, processes, and methods of evaluation used by professionals in two of the five main disciplines: literature, the arts, history, science, and mathematics.

NO ONE graduates without completing a portfolio.
