It is an honor to be a named scholar for such prestigious awards as the Truman, Marshall or Rhodes, among many others. Each national merit scholarship serves to support student scholars that exemplify the purpose and mission of the scholarship. The recipients represent extraordinary levels of achievement, dedication and high expectations of future contributions to society. The process can be daunting and the odds of winning discouraging; but the rewards are great!
Applications are designed to provide a complete picture of the applicant. For many students this is the first time they reflect inward to understand what has shaped them, where their passion lies, and what contributions they have made and hope to make, as well as to clarify their academic and career aspirations. Regardless of whether you “win” the award or not, the benefit of this self-evaluation process is significant. You will emerge from the process with a stronger sense of self, a defined academic or career path, a vision of your future, and the ability to articulate your goals and dreams.
The application process is time consuming and requires thoughtful and careful preparation. You may expect some moments of self-doubt and frustration during the process—but in the end we expect you will find this a personally rewarding experience. Each year a new class of scholars is named—why shouldn’t you be among them!
