Making Connections for Women

The newly-named Women’s Resource Center Coordinator Jessica Nare aims to enhance and support the success of women-identified students at SDSU.

This fall, SDSU greatly increased its support of women-identified students on campus with the opening of the Women’s Resource Center.

Jessica Nare has been named the coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center, which is designed to provide a vibrant, safe and inclusive space that educates, empowers and advocates for women’s rights and issues. A lecturer in the SDSU Women’s Studies Department since 2010, Nare holds a master’s degree in women’s studies from SDSU and previously served as Director of Leadership Programs at Jewish Family Service of San Diego.

“I’m passionate and committed to the Aztec community and really just thrilled to be on board in another capacity that supports SDSU students,” Nare said. “I’m going to keep teaching one class each semester, so that will provide students some exposure to the Women’s Resource Center and give students a chance to get involved in women’s issues in a way that didn’t exist before.”

At SDSU, women make up the majority of students on campus, with a gender distribution of 55 percent female students and 45 percent male students. The Women’s Resource Center will work to establish a campus culture that values gender diversity in a changing world and supports the personal, academic and professional success of women-identified students at the university.

“It is great to be on a campus as diverse as SDSU and there is a lot of energy and programming here aimed at supporting the needs of historically marginalized groups,” Nare said. “Whether it’s first-generation college students, students of color, or women students, SDSU is making sure these populations, which still face unique challenges, have the resources they need to be successful.”

The Women’s Resource Center will join other departments on campus that work to celebrate culturally diverse groups, including The Pride Center and the Center for Intercultural Relations, by offering specialized resources and programs for women-identifying students. Temporarily housed on the second floor of the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union, the Women’s Resource Center will be permanently located next to The Pride Center on the corner of Campanile Drive and Lindo Paseo. Construction on the center will be completed in late fall with a grand opening to be held shortly thereafter.

“We could not be more excited to open a Women’s Resource Center for the SDSU community and we know that the programs and services Jessica and the center bring to this campus will offer invaluable growth and leadership opportunities for all who participate,” said Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Christy Samarkos.

Some of the key program areas of the Women’s Resource Center will include leadership development, gender and social change issues, sexual violence prevention and survivor support, and resources to aid in identity exploration. The center will also celebrate the accomplishments of women students, faculty and staff, as well as offer women-related internship and volunteer opportunities.

Though focused on the unique needs of female students, male students are welcome and encouraged to utilize the center’s resources and programs. “On any campus, and certainly on a big campus like SDSU, providing an opportunity for students to connect with one another and develop community is really important,” Nare said. “For some students, developing a community based around other women on campus is a really powerful and transformative experience.”
